WELCOME TO TEAM PHILO!
My name is Philo Brathwaite, founder and director of Team Philo. As an avid Disc Golfer for the past 10 years and a touring Disc Golf Pro for the last 6 seasons, Team Philo was created to bring awareness, enthusiasm and Disc Golf Clinics to new communities around the world.
I truly believe that Disc Golf is a wonderful sport for all to enjoy, especially the youth. It is a relatively inexpensive sport to play; nowhere near the cost of traditional golf with its clubs, balls, bags, etc. Disc Golf is a sport that can be played solo or in teams of two. Either way, you can always challenge yourself. A Disc Golf course can be set up in many different areas, whether on a traditional ball golf course, in a park, a forested area, hilly areas, footie/soccer fields or even at the beach. Course designers use the natural elements around them, such as trees, ponds, sand and even telephone poles or wires as obstacles as it makes the layouts more interesting and the course more challenging. Check out this link to see examples of the types of courses one can play on. Disc Golf has been played on every continent and the sport has had tournaments in dozens of countries around the world.
In August 2011, Team Philo's first out reach took us to Barbados. This Caribbean nation played great host and welcomed the introduction of Disc Golf to the Island. With the help of Dave Feldberg, Garrett Guthie, Innova Champion Discs and the PDGA's Marco Polo Program, the trip was a great success with many promising prospects for the future of Disc Golf in Barbados.
We got off to a quick start when the local news caught wind of Team Philo on the Island and included us in the Saturday Sports Recap and an in-studio interview on Mornin' Barbados, a show that's watched by most locals daily. These interviews introduced the Team to the Island and gave us an opportunity to share Disc Golf with a wide variety of Bajans.
We were fortunate to be welcomed by a few day camps and youth groups holding inpromptu clinics and bringing awareness to the sport. They all had a blast! Check out our photo gallery for all the clinic action! Thanks to P.I.P. Day Camp, Folkstone Day Camp, Pacers Athletic Club and all the families that participated on the beaches of Barbados!
Special thanks to the University of the West Indies for allowing us to participate in their Freshmen Orientation. The University looks forward to pioneering Disc Golf in the near future.
We look forward to future trips to Barbados to establish permanent courses around the Island. Our first prospects include The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme land, 3W's Park and the campus of UWI.
Team Philo is dedicated to expanding the Disc Golf community around the world. If you'd like us to visit your City or Country please contact us for further information!
